1 Remember if you're planning to do a
room addition make sure the contractor you choose has experience
in that field because a kitchen remodeling contractor may not
know how to structurally tie in the addition in order for it to
align correctly with the roof.
2 Did you know that in the City of San
Antonio remodeling requires a contractor license for almost all
remodeling work? Most remodeling work requires a permit and
therefore needs to be done by a licensed home improvement
contractor.
3 Did you know that in the City of San
Antonio any work in excess of $2500 requires a home improvement
permit and in order to get that permit your contractor must be
licensed?
4 A good way to check out your remodeling
contractor is to call the City of San Antonio Licensing Division
and ask if they have any unresolved complaints about that
contractor and if they do RUN!
5 Is your contractor registered with the
State of Texas? The Texas Residential Construction Commission
requires that all builders and remodeling contractors register
in the State of Texas. Ask your contractor what his registration
# is.
6 Is your contractor a member of a
professional trade organization? Most contractors that are
involved in one tend to be more professional.
7 Make sure your contractor has plenty of
references and follow up on those references. Make sure they are
specific with the project you need. If the contractor
specializes in building fences you certainly don't want him to
build a kitchen for you.
8 Be sure and ask your contractor how
they deal with warranties. Do they have Joe the sub contractor
come out and try and fix it again or do they actually have a
warranty department that follows up with you.
9 Does your remodeling contractor have a
design department? Can they design the project that you want and
follow through with building it? If their design department
consists of an old napkin or a piece of notebook paper you may
want to reconsider your choice.
